Medicinal Plant Cultivation for Ayurvedic medicine manufacturing

Ayurvedic Herbal Pharmaceutical Industry is expanding rapidly. The World Health Organization estimated that by year 2050, trade in plant-based drugs will reach US$ 5 trillion. Due to the tremendous global demand for medicinal plants, they are indiscriminately collected from their natural habitats (mostly forest areas), resulting in their dwindling availability and seriously threatening their survival. SMPB is working to promote cultivation of medicinal plants and supported in a Mission mode under Centrally Sponsored Schemes.

Kurumthotti, the latest addition, is being grown by a five-member JLG at Varavoor on 2.5 acres. It was planted in June and will be harvested by December. Ayurveda hospitals, medicine manufacturing companies and institutions collect the plants, among them being Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala, Oushadhi, Medimix etc.
