  • Vernacular names: Dhanthappala, Kambippala, Neelappala, Vettupala, ദന്തപ്പാല, കമ്പിപ്പാല, നീലപ്പാല, വെട്ടുപാല (Malayalam), Pala indigo (English), Svetakutaja (Sanskrit), Dudhi (Hindi), Vapaalai (Tamil)
  • Distribution: India, Myanmar and Timor
  • Description: Deciduous trees. Leaves simple, opposite, distichous, estipulate. Flower bisexual, white, scented, in terminal cymes appearing along with new leaves. Fruit of 2 follicular mericarps, slender, smooth, green, cylindric, cohering at the tip; seed 16 mm long, black, commate at one end.

  • Habitat: Moist and dry deciduous forests, also in the plains

  • Parts used: Bark, seeds and leaves
  • Properties & Uses: Anthelmintic, anti-diarrhoeal, antidysenteric and febrifuge. Decoction of the bark and leaves are used as a febrifuge, stomachic and tonic. It is also used for chronic dysentery, diarrhoea, piles and skin diseases. The fresh leaves are pungent and are chewed to relieve toothache. The leaves with coconut oil used against psoriasis and other skin diseases.
