  • Vernacular names: Agathicheera, അഗത്തിചീര (Malayalam), Sesban (English), Agastya (Sanskrit), Basna (Hindi), Agathi (Tamil)
  • Distribution: Cultivated and naturalised in Tropical Africa and Asia, probably native of Indonesia
  • Description: Small trees. Leaves 18-30 cm long; leaflets 12-25 pairs, oblong. Racemes to 8 cm long, lax, 2-4 flowered. Flowers pink or white, pendulous. Pods 30-45 cm long, slender; seeds reddish-brown.
  • Habit: Shrub
  • Habitat: Cultivated
  • Flowering & Fruiting: June-September

  • Parts used: Roots, stem, leaves, flowers and fruits
  • Properties & Uses: Cooling, anthelmintic and febrifuge. Pounded bark is externally applied to cure scabies and the bark juice is used in diarrhoea and gastralgia. Flower juice is used in the treatment of eye diseases and intermittent fever. Leaf juice used in nasal catarrh and cephalalgia (Warrier et al., 1995).
