Rubia cordifolia L.

  • Vernacular names: Manchatti, മഞ്ചട്ടി (Malayalam), Indian madder (English), Manjishta (Sanskrit), Majit (Hindi), Manito (Tamil)
  • Distribution: Asia, Africa and Europe
  • Description: Climbers, stem 4-angle. Leaves whorled, 4 in each node, equal or unequal. Flowers greenish-white, in axillary dichotomous cymes.
  • Habit: Climbers/Lianas
  • Habitat: Semi-evergreen and moist deciduous forests
  • Flowering & Fruiting: November-December

  • Parts used: Root, leaves and fruits
  • Properties & Uses: Roots are sweet, bitter, acrid, antidysenteric, antipyretic, analgesic and anthelmintic. Roots are used to treat diseases of uterus, vagina, eye, ear and blood. It is also used to cures ulcers, urinary discharges, jaundice and piles. Leaves are sweet and oleaginous and they are used to increase appetite and biliousness. Fruits are useful in diseases of spleen.
