Phyllanthus emblica L.

  • Vernacular names: Nelli, നെല്ലി (Malayalam), Indian gooseberry (English), Dhatri (Sanskrit), Amla (Hindi), Nelli (Tamil)
  • Distribution: Throughout the tropics
  • Description: Medium trees. Leaves simple, alternate. Flowers unisexual, greenish-yellow, densely clustered in leaf axils. Fruit a capsule, sub globose, dehiscing into 6 cocci, disc enlarged, fleshy, yellowish-green, indehiscent berry.
  • Habit: Tree
  • Habitat: Moist deciduous forests, also cultivated in the plains
  • Flowering & Fruiting: July-February

  • Parts used: Root, bark, leaves and fruit
  • Properties & Uses: Rejuvenative, diuretic, anti-pyretic, digestive and carminative. The bark is used for the treatment of jaundice, gonorrhea, diarrhea and myalgia. The leaves are used in inflammation, conjunctivitis, diarrhea and dysentery. The fruits are used in cough, asthma, bronchitis, constipation, peptic ulcer, diarrhea, dysentery, cardiac disorders, diabetes, eye diseases, tuberculosis and general debility.
