Oroxylum indicum (L.) Kurz

  • Distribution: South India and Sri Lanka
  • Description: Medium trees; bark brownish-grey. Leaves compound, 2-3 pinnate, pinnae 5-9; imparipinnate, opposite. Flowers bisexual, in lax terminal racemes, reddish-purple outside, pinkish-yellow within, racemes long. Fruit a capsule, 2-valved, compressed, tapering at both end; seeds winged all around except at base.

  • Parts used: Root, bark, leaves and fruit
  • Properties & Uses: Anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory, aphrodisiac and expectorant. Root is used in the treatment of indigestion, fever, cough, diarrhea, dysentery, abdominal pain, rheumatism, vomiting, leprosy and bronchitis. The fruit is an expectorant and help to improve appetite.
