Monochoria vaginalis (Burm.f.) C.Presl

  • Distribution: India to China, Malesia and Japan
  • Description: Erect semi-aquatic herbs. Leaves obovate, base cordate, apex abruptly acuminate. Inflorescence of solitary terminal raceme. Flowers blue. Capsule oblong; seeds many, oblong, ribbed.

  • Habitat: Paddy fields and wet lowlands
  • Flowering & Fruiting: July-November

  • Properties & Uses: Root and leaves are cooling, bitter, sweet, aromatic, diuretic and tonic. Root stock is useful in burning sensation, vitiated conditions of pitta, dipsea, strangury, gastropathy, hepatopathy, cough, asthma, odontalgia, scurvy, boils and hemorrhages.
