  • Distribution: Native of Pacific Islands; cultivated in Tropical and Subtropical countries
  • Description: Shrubs. Leaves alternate, ovate to ovate-lanceolate. Flower red, white, pink, yellow or orange-yellow, axillary, solitary. Capsules oblong-rounded
  • Habit: Shrub
  • Habitat: Grown as ornamental plant

  • Parts used: Leaves, flowers and root
  • Properties & Uses: Cooling, astringent, demulcent, refrigerant and aphrodisiac. Flower buds are used to remove burning of the body, urinary discharges, seminal weakness and piles. Juice of the flower with juice of banana inflorescence cures acute dysentery. Flower fried in ghee is given in menorrhagia. Decoction of the flower with green betel nut is used to regulate menstrual cycle. Fresh flowers are macerated and mixed with water is taken to cure scanty menstruation. Flowers are used in blood dysentery. Roots are valuable in cough.
