Haldina cordifolia (Roxb.) Ridsdale

  • Vernacular names: Barakuram, Malamkadambu, മലംകടമ്പ് (Malayalam), Haldu (English), Haridru (Sanskrit), Haidu (Hindi), Kodambi (Tamil)
  • Distribution: India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Indo-China
  • Description: Large deciduous trees. Leaves simple, opposite, decussate, stipulate. Flowers bisexual, yellow, in axillary globose heads. Fruit a capsule, brown; seeds many small, with tail at one end and a bifid wing other end.

  • Parts used: Bark and root
  • Properties & Uses: Bark is tonic, vulnerary and aphrodisiac; cures inflammations, biliousness and skin diseases; juice is used to kill worms in sores; decoction of the bark and of that of Oroxylum indicum mixed with candied sugar is given as a drink in strangury. Root is used as an astringent in dysentery. Plant extracts possesse antibacterial properties.
