  • Distribution: Pantropical
  • Description: Tuberous herbs. Leaves few, basal, linear, gradually acuminate; sheaths light brownish. Inflorescence simple or compound. Nut obovate-oblong, trigonous, apiculate, brown.

  • Habitat: In the plains, fallow lands and agricultural fields

  • Parts used: Tubers
  • Properties & Uses: Tubers are astringent, digestive, tonic, stimulant, stomachic, diuretic, carminative and vermifuge. Decoction of the tubers is given in fever, diarrhea, dyspepsia and stomach complaints; infusion is useful in dysentery, vomiting and cholera. Fresh tubers are applied to the breast as galactagogue. Root paste is applied for healing wounds and sores.
