Curcuma zanthorrhiza Roxb.

  • Vernacular names: Manjakoova, മഞ്ഞക്കൂവ (Malayalam), Zedoary (English), Kachura (Sanskrit), Casthoorie munjel (Tamil)
  • Distribution: Cultivated and naturalised in Indo-Malaya
  • Description: Rhizomatous herbs. Leaves oblong-lanceolate, clouded with purple along the midrib. Flowers in compact, oblong spike; flowers yellow.
  • Habit: Herb
  • Habitat: Moist deciduous forests, also in the plains
  • Flowering & Fruiting: April-July

  • Parts used: Rhizomes
  • Properties & Uses: Rhizome is carminative, appetizer, anthelmintic and blood purifier; externally applied to bruises and sprains and to promote eruptions of small-pox. Rhizome paste is applied to forehead in headache. Essential oil from rhizome is anthelmintic and antimicrobial.
