Curcuma aromatica Salisb.

  • Vernacular names: Kasthurimanjal, കസ്തൂരിമഞ്ഞള്‍ (Malayalam), Wild turmeric (English), Aranyaharidra (Sanskrit), Kasturimanjal (Tamil)
  • Distribution: India, Sri Lanka and China
  • Description: Aromatic herbs; rhizome cream coloured. Leaves elliptic, acute at either ends; ligule membranous, obtuse. Spike 15-17 x 7 cm; crown purplish blue; bracts orbicular or obovate, yellowish green, tomentose. Flowers brownish-yellow; calyx lobes obtuse, corolla glabrous, brownish.

  • Parts used: Rhizomes
  • Properties & Uses: It is used for bruises, corn, sprains and is a well-known for enhancing complexion. Paste of rhizome with milk is used for dysentery and gastric ailments. Aqueous extracts of rhizomes are used for curing indigestion, rheumatism and dysentery. Apart from rhizomes, leaves are also used for healing wounds and fractured bones.
