  • Vernacular names: Kova, Koval, കോവ, കോവൽ (Malayalam), Ivy gourd, Scarlet gourd (English), Bimbi (Sanskrit), Bimb (Hindi), Kovai (Tamil)
  • Distribution: Peninsular India and Sri Lanka
  • Description: Woody climbers, tendrils simple. Leaves, palmately 3-5-lobed or angled. Flowers white, axillary, solitary. Fruit ovoid-oblong; pulp red; seeds oblong, compressed.
  • Habit: Climbers/Lianas
  • Habitat: Deciduous forests and wastelands, also cultivated
  • Flowering & Fruiting: December-April

  • Parts used: Leaves, root and fruit
  • Properties & Uses: Anti-pyretic, expectorant, anti-inflammatory and digestive. The roots are used for the treatment of vomiting, burning sensation and uterine discharges. Fruits are used in burning sensation, skin diseases, fever, asthma, cough and jaundice. The leaves and fruits are used to treat ulcer, inflammation, leprosy and anemia.
