Clitoria ternatea L.

  • Vernacular names: Sankupushpum, ശംഖുപുഷ്പം (Malayalam), Clitoria (English), Aparajita (Sanskrit), Khagia (Hindi), Sankupushpam (Tamil)
  • Distribution: Widely cultivated in the tropics, probably native of South America
  • Description: Climbing herbs. Leaves odd-pinnate. Flowers solitary, axillary, blue or white, clawed. Pods linear, compressed, apically beaked. Seeds many, compressed, reniform, black.
  • Habit: Climbers/Lianas
  • Habitat: Grown in the gardens, also runs wild
  • Flowering & Fruiting: July-October

  • Parts used: Whole plant
  • Properties & Uses: Cooling, laxative, diuretic and anthelmintic. The roots are used for the treatment of eye diseases, tuberculosis, headache, leucoderma, inflammations, dysentery, asthma and ulcer. Decoction of root bark is used for relieving irritations of the bladder and urethra. The roasted seeds powder is used for the treatment of abdominal pain, dropsy and liver disorder.
