Cissus quadrangularis L.

  • Vernacular names: Changalamparanda, ചങ്ങലംപരണ്ട (Malayalam), Adament creeper (English), Ajravalli (Sanskrit), Pirandai (Tamil)
  • Distribution: Widespread in the drier parts of Africa, Arabia and Indo-Malesia
  • Description: Climbing shrubs. Stem 4-angular, winged or ridged at angles. Leaves simple, entire or 3-lobed. Flowers greenish-yellow, cymes umbellate. Berry, subglobose; seeds black, smooth.

  • Habitat: Cultivated in homesteads

  • Parts used: Whole plant
  • Properties & Uses: Whole plant is bitter, thermogenic, laxative, anthelmintic, carminative, digestive, stomachic, depurative, aphrodisiac and ophthalmic. Whole plant is used for the treatment of anorexia, dyspepsia, colic, flatulence, skin diseases, leprosy, haemorrhages, chronic ulcers, tumours, epilepsy, convulsions, factures and swellings. Shoots are useful in scurvy, colonopathy, asthma, burns and wounds. Powdered roots or stem paste are used in bone fractures.
