Bauhinia purpurea L.

  • Distribution: Native of South East Asia
  • Description: Small trees. Leaves bilobed, coriaceous. Inflorescence few flowered panicles at the ends of the branchlets. Flowers pedicellate, purple. Pod broad, long; seeds almost round, brown, smooth.
  • Habit: Shrub
  • Habitat: Often cultivated
  • Flowering & Fruiting: September-December

  • Parts used: Bark and flower bud
  • Properties & Uses: Laxative, anthelmintic and antiinflammatory. Decoction pf the stem bark is used to treat diarrhoea, ulcers, swellings leprosy, cough and menstrual disorders. Flower buds are used in haemorrhagic diseases, leucorrhoea and cough. The decoction of the bark taken orally twice a day for curing coughs and related diseases.
