Bambusa bambos (L.) Voss

  • Vernacular names: Mula, Elli, മുള, ഇല്ലി (Malayalam), Spiny bamboo (English), Vamsha (Sanskrit), Mungil, Periya Mungil (Tamil)
  • Distribution: India and Sri Lanka
  • Description: Arborescent thorny grass. Leaves to 20 cm long; sheaths to 12 x .2 cm, linear, glabrous; ligule short, entire. Inflorescence a compound panicle with the spikelets in heads. Spikelets 1-many-flowered, 0.8-2 cm long, oblong, terete. Flowers cream. Caryopsis linearly cylindric.

  • Parts used: Root, Leaves and stem bark
  • Properties & Uses: Stem paste is used to treat cuts and wounds. Crushed young shoots applied on joints to treat rheumatism. Bark is used to treat snake bite. Decoction of root is used to treat anuria. Leaves are used to treat blood purification and leucoderma.
