Azadirachta indica A.Juss.

  • Distribution: Indo-Malesia
  • Description: Small trees, bark greyish-brown, vertically striated. Leaves imparipinnate, alternate, estipulate. Flowers bisexual, white, in axillary panicles. Fruit a drupe, oblong-ovoid, greenish-yellow; seed one, surrounded by a sweet pulp.

  • Parts used: Bark, leaves, flowers, fruit and seeds
  • Properties & Uses: Bark is bitter, tonic, refrigerant, anthelmintic and astringent. Bark is used to treat fatigue, fever, thirst, cough, intermittent fever and general debility. Leaves are alexiteric, anthelmintic and insecticidal. Decoction of the fresh leaves are antiseptic and is used in ulcers and eczema. Flowers are stimulant, stomachic and anthelmintic. Gum of the bark is a demulcent tonic; useful in catarrhal affections accompanied by great debility. Fruit is purgative and anthelmintic; cures urinary discharges, skin diseases, tumours, piles, and toothache. Seed oil is anthelmintic and alterative; useful in skin diseases, ulcers and rheumatism. Pills made from the leaf paste are given to cure scabies along with bath with the leaf boiled water. Leaf juice is given in jaundice. Kernel powder of seeds is repellent against various insects. Kernel is one of the constituents in hair composition useful in preventing hair loss and treatment of dandruff. Seed cake used as insecticide and nematicide, possesse vermicidal properties.
