Acorus calamus L.

  • Distribution: North temperate hemisphere and Tropical Asia
  • Description: Semi-aquatic aromatic perennial herbs. Leaves narrow, linear to narrowly ensiform, glossy bright green, apex acute, base amplexicaul. Flowers small, pale green, fragrant, arranged compactly on a sessile spike. Fruits green, angular, 3-celled, fleshy, containing 1-3 oblong seeds.

  • Habitat: Semi-aquatic and marshy localities
  • Flowering & Fruiting: April-July

  • Parts used: Rhizomes
  • Properties & Uses: Carminative, anthelmintic, anti-microbial and improving memory. It is used in various forms to treat epilepsy, dysentery, fever, piles, hoarseness of voice and speech, obesity, typhoid, ear ache, liver and kidney ailments and inflammation of throat.
