Ixora coccinea L.

  • Vernacular names: Chethi, Thechi, ചെത്തി, തെച്ചി (Malayalam), Sacred Ixora (English), Paranti (Sanskrit), Thetti, Sinduram (Tamil)
  • Distribution: Peninsular India and Sri Lanka
  • Description: Bushy shrubs. Leaves opposite, elliptic to oblong. Corymbs, flowers scarlet and yellow. Fruits a berry, didymous; seeds 2, globose, 0.3-0.4 cm diam.
  • Habit: Shrub
  • Habitat: In the lateritic plains, also grown in homesteads
  • Flowering & Fruiting: Throughout the year

  • Parts used: Root, leaves and flower
  • Properties & Uses: Roots are sedative and stomachic; used in hiccup, fever, gonorrhoea, diarrhoea and dysentery. Flowers are used in the treatment of dysentery, leucorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea, haemoptysis and catarrhal bronchitis. Leaves are used in diarrhea.
